The short answer - it was TapGuard. It runs all the time in the background,
so I guess it got hosed during the crash.
Tried pulling out the prefs, no change. Off to extension manager. The
extensions made no difference, started on control panels and hit paydirt
with TapGuard.
Wow, what a relief. Much thanks to all who offered suggestions.
