>I have one of those, albeit I use it with my PB 2400. I use to use the Fwb >CD Toolkit driveers, now I use the Intech CD/DVD SpeedTools(recommended by >MacGuru's). Fully suppported by both, never any problems. The patched Apple CD driver (or unpatched 5.3.1 driver from the OS 7.6.0 distribution) does work with any SCSI-2 CD-ROM - the main thing that's addressed by the Intech drivers is the lack of a power eject on the portable drives. This manifests in a fairly harmless problem when you drag a disc icon to the trash and the driver receives a SCSI error from the drive after trying to issue an eject command (basically just an extra Finder dialog you have to dismiss). >I like the built in externa speakers--great for music, but not good for >portability. I am pretty sure it supports booting from the CD-Rom. You should be able to boot from any ATAPI or SCSI-2 compliant CD-ROM (it can help to set the SCSI ID to 3), pursuant to the usual occasional weirdness when booting a Mac from a secondary device. The only real issue with the KXL-783 drive (which also affects every other portable SCSI drive I've checked, mostly due to their age) is that it doesn't support digital audio extraction: you can't use it to rip tracks from your CD music discs for encoding to MP3 or burning to a compilation disc. Newer portable SCSI-2 drives probably do support this, or you could also just buy a cheap old 2x-8x Pioneer or Apple drive in a desktop external case. -- Marc Sira | [EMAIL PROTECTED] "If you can't play with words, what good are they?" ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
