Well, after two years, my PB2400 is in the midst of its first Green Light of Death.
I'm into my third day. I've followed Sidney Ho's GLOD advice - - thank goodness for
this list (and my printing of his message) - - but largely to no avail (including 60
sec resets w/o battery and w/ and w/o AC; letting it sit for hours/overnight). After
performing a special ritual dance (see below), I've gotten it to chime; fewer times to
the happy face; even fewer times to the OS 8.6 splash page; still fewer times to start
loading extensions - - all before it freezes. Twice I've gotten a complete startup,
only to freeze up a couple of minutes later.

How bad off am I, and what are my next steps? I'm sure I'm not alone in anticipating
a (slim)PB announcement at MacWorld. But I still need my PB2400 for the months it
would take while a new book is on order. Plus I for one will always keep this baby as
a backup. Downtimes like this one only reinforce this strategy.

If you find it useful, more details follow regarding my current situation. Thanks for
your help.

1. The start: Wouldn't wake from a sleep. Had to press the reset button a couple
times before it restarted. This has been necessary on occassion, but has usually
cleared up. This time it didn't clear up. After a few minutes of use, the system
froze - - no error message, just a freeze. Hitting the reset button would shut down
the machine, but no further.

2. Sidney's GLOD advice: As mentioned above to no avail. At least I've gotten to the
point that the GLOD goes out.

3. My partial (and rare) startups: In the dead of night, I first heard a slight high
pitch tone if I held in the reset button. This happens only on every other reset. If
I hold it in long enough, the tone will grow stronger - - as if its powering up.
After this I started doing "the dance" - - toggling back-and-forth between hitting the
reset and power button. Incrementally, the power "click" - - more like a static
noise - - will grow stronger and stronger. After what seems between 50-100 of this
toggling, I'll get a chime. The first time I got a full startup before freezing after
a few minutes. After successive "dances," I would make progressively worse progress -
- freezes during the loading of extensions; after the OS 8.6 splash page appears;
after the happy face; after the screen lights up; after the chime; then nothing.
After more dancing, I got a second startup before freezing, and it appears I'm back on
the downward slope.

Again, thanks for any guidance.
