Mark,
It's not quite so simple as macmak explains. In order to get into the control panel
and change the touchpad to the click and click-and-drag modes, one has to be able to
click with the clicker. This happened to me recently: I noticed my mechanical
clicker wasn't responding. (I had touch pad click capability at the time.) Like a
rock, I changed the click mode to the clicker (using the touchpad) to investigate.
Well, surprise! This rendered the touchpad "unclickable." And since the clicker
didn't work, the whole computer was unclickable. Luckily, the mechanical clicker
succeeded in making contact once in about a hundred tries. I was able to revert to
the touchpad click mode during one such success and have been in this mode ever since.
