I'm pretty sure that the number on the box is incomplete. There's enough
there for retailer to track it until it is sold. Otherwise anyone who came
along could copy all the serial numbers they wanted from the store shelf. If
you can find the registration card or some other record you'll probably find
that it has some additional characters to complete the number. I believe
Adobe even provided sticky labels for the owner to affix to the disk or
owners manual etc. for easy reference.
Whenever I get new software I make a habit of writing the complete number on
the install disk as well as the manual (although they're fast becoming rare)
and wherever else I think I would look when I need to reinstall something.
