HD heads float over the platter on an air cushion. Air density is insufficient at
altitudes over 7-10k . Any thump would/may cause the head to monetarily brush the
platter. Not a problem on most aircraft. Some military aircraft are shy on total
pressurization and have special MIL spec sealed drives in equipment bays.
Main concern is on high altitude locations such as Mauna Kea astronomical observatory
at 13.8k ,they use RAM disks.
. As for shipping--some HD have a pressure diaphragm that may balloon.
