I speed read my accumulated Xmas Duolists, started/abandoned this post (and
with Bob Friede to spur me on with how to do's), decided to finish it. On

PORT DOOR REPAIR
A surprising number of Powerbook plastic parts, internal and external, can
be fixed. Assuming, as I already did for myself, that a broken 2400 port
door will be difficult to find, here's how to jury rig a simple repair into
an effective permanent solution:

1. Take a normal small paper clip. Bend one straight end 90 deg (as we do
to eject recalcitrant floppies or PC cards) and heat the tip with a match.

2. Then carefully align the hot tip to the original location of the broken
tab pivot, as close to the port door wall as you can align it. Drive the hot
end with steady mild pressure through the remnant tab.

3. Cut that paper clip end or another one about 1/2-3/4" (12-18mm) long
with wire cutters or pliers. Push the cut straight part of the clip through
the hole made by the previous "hot" operation. Leave about a 1/16" or
1-1.5mm protrusion where the original tab pivot used to be.

4. Lay a thin film of Superglue along the interior length of the metal clip
end and the longitudinal corner of the port door. The resulting repair is
much stronger than new, aesthetically acceptable and entirely hidden from
view.

5. When the other plastic tab pivot point breaks, you now know what to do.

While on the subject of Superglue, for fellow diehards and inveterate
tinkerers:

FIXING / TIGHTENING THE 2400c LOWER CASE
Since my primary 2400c has been apart so many times (upgraded and
downgraded) Superglue is also useful to fix the position of the brass female
threaded inserts in the lower plastic case--which eventually loosen from
their seats in the plastic molding receptacles, as one tries to tighten all
of the screws. Simply thread a screw into the "loose" insert, pull it out,
add a SMALL drop of Superglue into the plastic part and reinsert the brass
part into the plastic with firm pressure applied from directly overhead.
