I have an Adaptec SCSI card in my G4 which has worked great for the last
year. At the time I think it was around $40-45. I think it would be an
easier alternative to trying the RAM disk thing.

You might also try picking up an older external Apple CD-ROM drive to hook
up to the 2400. I picked up a 4x internal for $13 on eBay and installed it
in an old Syquest box. It's slow but it works just great and you can boot
from it.
