I recently had a problem booting my 1400 from CD (since I installed a 400MHz
G3). I found that I had to use the four-finger-salute to force it to boot
from a CD (prior to that it always worked via the C key or Startup Disk CP).

Hold down Shift;Option;Command;Delete when at startup.

Otherwise you may be able to connect to another Mac using SCSI disk mode and
the right cable.
