What happens if I >just take the battery >out, run on AC when I need it and leave it unplugged when I don't. Do I >just lose the clock/calender functions. You can remove the main battery any time you like and run without it. The only thing to be aware of is that if you sleep the powerbook with no battery and then unplug it, it will begin to draw from the PRAM battery to maintain the contents of memory (as if you were merely changing main batteries while asleep). Just remember to shut it down before moving it between plug-ins, and you'll see no difference as compared to having a functional main battery. The PRAM battery is also rechargeable, so even if you do drain it once in a while it won't be permanently out of commission (it might even be good for it, since it's a NiCad or NiMH). Losing the PRAM battery is a lot more inconvenient, and the symptoms can range from lost date and settings (keyboard and mouse speed are about the only remaining settings that aren't refreshed from saved preferences at boot time these days) to the inability to boot at all. The 2400's power manager is already pretty flaky, so not having a battery to maintain it can be a real hassle. If my PRAM and main battery were both dead and I had no way to replace them, I'd probably write the computer off and buy a new one (especially given its fragile nature in certain other respects). However, the PRAM battery should last a lot longer than the main one, as long as you don't stress it unduly. -- Marc Sira | [EMAIL PROTECTED] "If you can't play with words, what good are they?" ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
