If you're running OS8.x or higher try this.
Double-click on the hard drive but hold the button down on the 2nd click.
Your cursor will become a magnifying glass. Then within a second or so the
window will pop open right beneath your cursor. As soon as it appears,
release the button.
This is called Spring Loaded Folders and you can adjust the delay in your
preferences under the Finders Edit menu.
