To read subjects/messages when I'm not tethered to my cable modem, I
use a web browser to go to http://www.pandamail.net . [It redirects
you to www.bstar.net/panda] Enter user name, server name and
password, and it lists your headers. See some spam you don't want?
One click and it's deleted. Check a bunch and delete them all at
once. Read the message by clicking on the subject. If your ISP allows
it, you may even be able to write replies/new mails. They save no
info about you, as soon as you log out, you're a stranger to them. I
have no affiliation with them other than being a satisfied user.

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but it gets the job
done for me.
