In fact, that's exactly what Kevin at MCE suggests.
Always insert the USB card after bootup and eject
before shut down. If you check with your archive, one
fo the brainiacs here even wrote an applescript so the
machine ejects the usb card prior to shutdown. Of
course, there's always the paper clip........
