Definitely, the battery savings are due to the fact that you no longer have to keep the HD platters rotating at 4500 RPM or so. Once you start accessing the HD, your battery usage is the same as before you set up the RAM disk. Also, if you are running from a HD systems folder, but will be doing something that does not involve accessing the HD you can save the battery by spinning down the HD (It is often in the control strip, if not there is a key combo, but I don't remember it. However, if you spin up the HD a lot after spinning it down, you will not recognize savings, you will actually burn the battery charge faster.
