FWIW, I bought a couple of ALPS Glidepoint trackpads a couple of years ago
when MicroCenter (and others) was blowing them out at $10 a piece. I don't
take my 280c anywhere w/o it. Now, obviously, you have to hook up a
microdock to get the ADB port, but it's so much easier to use than that
trackball! Actually, the trackball is fine, it's just that the buttons are
awkwardly placed...
Anyway, you might be able to find some of these cheap somewhere. And it
doesn't require fiddling with the internals of your Duo (not that I'm sure
you can even put a 2300 trackpad on a 280). I've even thought about using
Velcro to attach it...
