I think it may help to remember that there's a difference between what you may find in
Apples's Tech Info Library, and events in the real world....
In 1997, every new Mac and clone shipped with System 7.6 or 7.6.1, and all System CD's
of that era are marked as "System 7.x" instead of "Mac OS" - at least every one that
I've ever seen with my own eyeballs.
Sounds to me as if someone at Apple has decided to do a little retroactive
record-keeping....
