Scott and Fellow Troups,

Bad news and perhaps good news for 68k owners... Look what I found in the
README for Fortify.

http://www.fortify.net/README_main.html

Note the line: "MacOS PowerPC versions only, version v4.06 onwards only."

GOOD NEWS? The paragraph before the above:

But aren't the 128-bit versions of Communicator available outside the U.S.?

Yes. In January 2000, the U.S. Government relaxed export regulations over
certain classes of mass-market encryption products. In line with these
changes, Netscape has made the strong-crypto versions of Communicator and
Navigator available worldwide. If you download one of these browsers from
the Netscape servers, then you will not need Fortify for Netscape.

The full details and effects of this change are explained further here.

Toward the end of the lengthy README are instructions for various Web tests
to see what your Netscape is capable of...

The BIG question... WHICH are the "strong-crypto versions" on the Netscape
site?

Yes? No? 7.6.1 Only! "But it's a niche." - anonymous Mac Ecologist

Anyone actually download this thing and test it? It would take me hours
here in "Cyberia" :-(

And at the end of this README is a great history of cracking the earlier
codes. Hats off to the Aussies who did this!

Good discussion...
