Hi guys, Thanks very much for your advice! I was afraid I was going to have to get the motherboard replaced AGAIN (already had to twice). At first throwing out the finder preferences didn't seem to help (even though I rebooted), but now my mac has been running problem-free for several hours, so I guess it did the trick after all. :-) Hooray for the duo/2400 list!
