AFAIK, there's absolutely no reason NOT to go to MacOS 7.6.1 on a Duo 230.
And there are very good reasons TO use that version (improved Open Transport
being one of them).  It's been ages since I used anything less than OS 8.1,
but I seem to recall that 7.6.1 was FAR more stable on my 660av.
