Yes, it *is*, when it is working! That's what makes it all the harder to
swallow.

Thanks for your efforts, but this doesn't help. It's the 68040 version
that's problematic, not the PPC version that you're using. I've received
enough responses now to suggest there's a real problem with the 680x0
version with no obvious fix. In my case the problem renders iCab almost
unusable, since it always quits within at most 5 minutes of starting up
(for me).

For those counting, that leaves just Explorer, Netscape, Wannabe and Lynx
for surfing on 68040 machines, as far as I know. Explorer has problems
with scripting and expired security certificates, so you can't do https.
Netscape appears to work fine (for me) and is robust but v-e-r-y v-e-r-y
s-l-o-w. Wannabe is said to be great (I haven't used it much) but is
text-only --- which would be perfect if so many sites weren't unusable in
text-only. Lynx is also text-only, and also AFAIK only an old and dated
beta version is available.

Opera claims they'll release a 680x0 version *after* they complete an OS X
version. Since it's now been more than 3 years since they started on a
standard PPC MacOS version, I'm not expecting to live long enough to see a
beta of Opera 680X0.

I'm thinking my perfectly sweet and mint Duo 280c may be destined for the
dust bin a bit earlier than I had imagined!
