I had something similar happen to me a few years back -- groups started 
disappearing.

First thing, make a back-up of the file. In fact, make two.

Next try these things:

Do a rebuild of your mail database. It make clear up the problem even 
though the address book is in a seperate file.

Second, run a disk tools program like Norton or Diskwarrior.

If the problem still happens. Go back to one of your back ups and export 
it all. And re-import it into a virgin Address Book.

Sadly, this last step is what I had to do but the other steps might save 
you from having to do through that.
