Peter,
I've also given this hack a bit of thought, and here's what I think is
required:
1) a boost for the power supply: the dock supply is barely adequate
for powering the standard internals. I've had a "perfectly working"
2gB drive spit, stall and squirm when stuffed in a dock -- even
"correctly" terminated [actively]. Bring in 12 + 5 volts from outside
the case, or hack a pee-cee NLX [200 watt] supply, which is the
smallest, closest footprint available, I think. The current supply
could probably be hot-rodded with a commensurate shortening of
its usable life.
2) make some room: most [5-1/4"] cd chassis are a sniffle too wide to fit
between the current center mounting screwpost and keylock [about 5-1/8"].
the hard disk resides on the opposite side of the case from the
keylock, so its not really in the way. The center post can't easily be
nuked, because it provides support for pulling the deck flat, which
affects the docking clearance [i.e. the duo gets stuck more
often without it]. I'm thinking a replacement for the floppy drive bay
is an easier workaround.
3) sort out the scsi termination, probably by hacking an appropriate
resistor pack; I suspect that the MB's term is sized for the
"ring" of that ultra-short scsi cable. Some older cd drives had
plug-in packs that could be tuned by substituting your own resistor
choices. the cable length will approx. triple, with "double"
the load. I used to have an url for figuring this out, somewhere....
4) boot manager? perhaps mklinux? so that the [non-apple] cd drive gets
found by the OS?
5) adda bit of custom metalwork... and some shaved plastic.
remember -- always use oxygen [as in face mask] when welding zinc.
