I use both Type II 220mb Sandisk flash cards (PC formatted) and Type III HDs
separately formatted for both PC / Mac. I have to exchange data (Type II
only) with my venerable DOS based HP200lx (imagine up to 96mb ram & over 1gb
flash possible, full 56k & cellular & Bluetooth compatibility in a tiny
package!), and with various PC laptops (TII & III). They are very useful. I
keep only one device (TIII) Mac formatted with full emergency configuration
to recover and drive my 2400. The Sandisks are too expensive/versatile to
(irreversibly) format to Mac (unless returning them to Sandisk).

For me, one of the greatest comforts (read: necessities) of the 2400
(especially for international travel with important files) is the capability
of the 2400 to boot from the PCMCIA slot. Unfortunately (and this falls into
the "What are they thinking?" category), every Powerbook, post Wallstreet,
cannot boot from the PCMCIA slot. This routine has been eliminated from ROM,
and I have even petitioned Apple to restore this capability--well before
Titanium. In fact, it's been the "extra" disadvantage on top of a few others
that prevent me from buying a 1st generation G4-Ti and left me cool on
Pismo. So my G3-2400 continues to serve well--and I get a "perverse" pride
at being able to still use a 4 year old computer at little sacrifice to
utility and even speed.

But I do dream of being able to run a nearly 1gb ram disk with a 1gb flash
to 4gb Microdrive (coming from IBM) at minimum power in flight--just for the
heck of it. Battery life could be extended to 8-10 hours?

Greetings from snowy Switzerland--we have over a foot of snow today knocking
cherry blossoms off of the trees and it's falling into tomorrow. I'm stuck
on a mountainside with summer tires and no way down from this freak storm
(and my neighbors' palm trees will be suffering too). So all this extra
time...
