If she is going to spend the money. . go ahead and have her put the Newer G4 400Mhz or 500Mhz processor in there. It will not be much more expensive than a G3 -and CERTAINLY worth the extra. > > Now if this was my computer I would just sell it and buy a G4 That would be a really dumb thing to do! I bought my venerable PM 7600 brand new. This machine is SO capable, for its vintage!! The PCI slots let you move to USB or FireWire. . it has built-in Ethernet. . AV. . yadda. . yadda. I have two printers an SCSI chain that includes 3 external APS hard drives (total capacity 25 Gigs) , CDRW drive, ZIP and scanner. It has been through several metamorphosis, since then. I first replaced the 132Mhz processor with an Apple 200Mhz. The next move was to a Newer G3 300Mhz. . and that was wonderful. Then I bought another box for my kids, just like the first, I liked the platform so much, and dropped the 200Mhz processor in that one. About the time I heard the distressing news that Newer was going tits up, I started looking on eBay and found a G4 500Mhz. I jumped on it (about $400) and the difference between the G3 300 and G4 500 are REMARKABLE. It REALLY speeds up complex PPC native applications, like PhotoShop, etc. > Newer probably makes the best all-round upgrades. Cannot argue with that. Given the choice, I would always buy a Newer product, even used. > if you want a Newer upgrade, you'd better not wait. Sonnet also makes a > good upgrade, I hear, but if I could get a Newer, I'd take it over the > Sonnet. The PowerLogix falls last. I have not looked at what eBay has listed, but, that is essentially where I do all my shopping. It would pay to just keep an eye on eBay, as they come up all the time. I have this G3 300Mhz sitting here on my ping pong table, trying to decided if I will install it in the other 7600 (no one uses it anymore) or what. I dont think I am going to sell it, as if (god forbid) the G4 dies, I would be hard pressed to find another one as good. ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
