I recently started seeing screen artifacts on my PB2400, especially ugly yellow or mauve shading running horizontally from other images on-screen. Nothing that prevented use, but really awful. Last nite, after some Laphroig to clear my mind, I pried up the bumpers & name labels from the screen bezel, then popped it apart. Underneath, surrounding the screen on all sides, is a silvery foil shield, held down by various screws and copper (-plated?) spring clips to ensure electrical contact. Of the approx 12 screws, maybe 8 were loose, three by a couple of turns. Tightened these (careful! the foil wanted to rotate with one of the screw's washers, which would've torn it), positioned the clips just where they came from, pressed it together and DONE! All symptoms fixed! Less than a half hour start-to-finish. Moral: Don't go in without a good excuse; every incursion reduces reliability. But it's not just the 2400's CPU board that is subject to falling apart, and it's an easy fix for somebody who can be cautious and has a very small Phillips driver. No cosmetic damage to the case. Try this one at home if you see similar uglies. ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables.
