It could be same corruption in your "clean" system as well as your boot
partition--however unlikely that might sound. It has happened to me and took
a while to isolate. Also try to rebuild desktop and /or run Disk Warrior.

Alternatively, if problem persists it could be a bad CPU. Try a Disk Repair
emergency floppy and see if the CPU handles that without freezing.
Deteriorating CPU is my best guess.

I'm in Switzerland, presumably your side of the Atlantic. At the moment I
have enough 2400s and spare CPU cards including 603e/180 to test/diagnose it
for you if you have no other solution. I'm not in the biz but willing to
help an isolated fellow lister.

MB less likely but not excluded. IMO, the two most likely problems are as
per above.
