I'd add that there is a definite need for some sort of virus protection,
especially in windows environs, if you are connected to the Internet and
receiving email. My workplace is quite small but fully connected to the
net: everyone has access via DSL and a router. We have a virus about 1x on
average a month come through, though when some of the nasties come up, we
get bombed by others passing them along--the email mass mailers are
horrendous if you are on an infected computer's list.

I'm paranoid, according to one software supplier because I have set up full
protection on all the computers: email checks, new file checks, weekly
scans etc. So, when I'm out of the office, the genius tech guy comes around
to troubleshoot his program. He claims I'm paranoid with the amount of
blocks I've set up and disables most on two machines. Two weeks later I
find out that he's done this when one of those machines is sent a file with
a virus. I found out because I was asked to open it first and my computer
found the virus, which would have been found by the email scan. The virus
was with a file sent by that company as an update. Needless to say, the
tech guy was embarrassed.

My point, having a bit of protection is a good idea.
