Have been keeping a close eye on the new iBook rumors, here's what I got so far. . .

It will be "more TiBook-like than iMac-like" at around 1.5 inches with a 12.1 inch screen.

Some comments say the screen is too small but we Duo-listas know better, don't we? If Apple trims the real estate beyond the screen like they did on the Ti-book, the new iBook could be within a half inch of our beloved 2400's current size. I'm frankly dubious about it being this small due to public outcry over the smaller keyboard but that would be great with me if it were.

Have read it might be Aluminum clad of various colors, (I'm doubtful as aluminum is too soft and anodized colors will scratch too easily), or cased with translucent plastic textures (more likely). This makes me a little nervous as I don't really want something that screams "I'm trendy!" as I plan to keep it for a few years. One mention was of a "slate" appearance which may be the subdued look that I'll want. A Titanium case would be the cat's meow.

"G3 processors at 400 and 500MHz are considered most likely for the standard iBook and the Special Edition model".

My G3 is running at 120MHz so that'll be a nice boost for me and an even better one for stock 2400's. Do I care that it's not a G4? Not really. If putting in a G3 keeps the price down, that's fine too.

"Ports will be similar to the current iBook (USB, Firewire, AV out, 10/100 Ethernet, v.90 Modem) but with the addition of a VGA-out port that will most likely support a second independent display and mirroring of the internal display"

Of all the reasons to move to a new laptop, having a stable and reliable USB port is very high on the list due to my Richochet modem. I hate having to hold my breath while the Finder tries to decide if it's going to mount the USB icon on the desktop, quit or crash. The S-VHS port sounds nice too.

"in the new model, it has been mentioned repeatedly that the memory the machine ships with (64 or 128MB of RAM, most likely) should be in a second removable slot, giving the new iBooks two upgradable ultra-low-profile SO-DIMM slots for up to 1GB of RAM" This is fantastic, never has memory been this cheap and may never be again. The idea of having 512 MB or more of Ram makes me light-headed.

Price points I've read call it at $999 up to $1499. This is great, saves a grand I can now spend on an Airport and a USB floppy. That it might have a CDD/DVD drive is a bonus.

If this happens it'll be a really shrewd move for Apple. I'm guessing that they were planning to hold off offering this until later in the year but thanks to the success of the Ti-Book they have some much needed momentum to capitalize on. Plus they've learned that they can put off making the thing for a month or so until the pipeline fills up. In the recent earnings statement was the fact that Japan sales were extremely good and will only get better when the new subportable comes out. If it doesn't happen I'll get over it as I already have the best laptop made <grin>.

(Hopefully the powers that be that offer the list will direct new iBook users for the Duo 2400 list as it's really about Apple's sub-portables. I imagine many of us will be springing for the new iBook and it would be nice to keep the community in one place.)
