I'm happy to say that I've put in my order for the new iBook -- maxed out 256MB/20GB/DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo. It's not the ideal replacement for my PB2400/180MHz/80MB/6GB, but it's close enough -- perhaps as close as Apple will get to a replacing our subnotebooks. It was such a long wait, I was eye-balling the Sony VAIO. I'm glad I don't have to go to the dark side, but thought some might be interested in the iBook-VAIO comparison. Interestingly, I don't believe Steve made a Sony comparison the way he did with the TiBook intro. I was eye-balling the VAIO R505 as a PB2400 replacement, and I think its also the closest to the new iBook: iBook w/CD-RW R505TEK 12.1" 12.1" G3 500 PIII 750 10GB 15GB 128MB 128MB Mac OS 9.1 Win ME 4.9 lbs 3.75 lbs + ext CD-RW + 2nd batt (to approach 5hrs) = ~5 lbs $1599.99 $2499.99 + $299.99 + $199.99 = $2999.97 Not unless anyone thinks the extra 5GB or the quasi-megahertz gap -- not to mention the beauty of Windows ME -- is worth the extra $1400, Apple has a slam dunk here. I personally would have traded out the optical drive to an external to lose more poundage for everyday use, but I'm shocked Steve came as close as he did to my ideal.
