I 'frankenbooked' the two together and fixed both of their idiosyncracies, but then I ran into a Japanese website that described how to fix this problem (thankfully in English as well as Japanese). It came down to a gear falling out of alignment on the eject mechanism of the 2400's PC Card cage. Easy to fix apparently. I'll try and dig up the URL in my archives and post it.
