Just a guess, but this combination of screen brightness trouble / backlight trouble, sounds like a bad connection. Check upper case's cable and it's connections. If its a foil cable as on the 2300c, then it is also subject to foil cracks: leads to odd, intermittant troubles which change if pressure is applied. (Had to replace it.)
