I used to use a GV 56Kv90 card in my PB's but found that their
performance deteriorated as they warmed up. One solution was to eject the
card after some failed connections, letting it cool off, and then using
it some more. This process became so annoying that I switched to Supra
56K external modems. I have one wherever I need to use the internet.
I've been a Mac Modem Magic user for over 2 years now. Back when I used
FreePPP exclusively, I thought that the simple generic string "AT&F"
worked quite nicely everywhere I went, but connect speeds were not the
greatest. Since using MMM with Remote Access I consistently connect at
49K+ on dial-ups.

When I have to use the GV card, I use no GV software at all. It's
completely unnecessary unless one's using the modem/ethernet combo card
or has a crying need to fax using their awful software.

Whoa. Failure to connect where? To your ISP? If you connect to your ISP
first and then fire up CE (which I still use too, in all my Macs) and CE
fails to send/collect your email, the problem is not in the init string;
it's more likely something awry in your specific CE Account setting.

This CE thing continues to make little sense to me. If you're using the
56K Combo card, I would suspect the card. Not so with the plain 56K card
though. They have always worked for me unless they get too warm.
Remember, the 2400 gets hot! Some modems are even less heat-resistant
than others. That's why I've switched to an external despite the
inconvenience that brings.

If you're using the plain Modem GV Card with FreePPP, using AT&F always
works. You can't get more generic than that. For the rest of the
settings, contact me offlist. I spent some years in the arcane world of
init string creation and, believe me, it's a real chore to learn. The
modem manufacturers provide minimal instructions, and it's hit or miss a
lot of the time. Buying MMM ended a huge and frustrating waste of time
for me. The author has been willing to learn the ropes and put in the
incredible number of hours necessary to come up with effective solutions
for a plethora of modems.
You might also look at your Remote Access settings. In the Options
section, be sure you have not checked Verbose Logging in the Connection
window, and not checked TCP header compression in the Protocol window.
Error correction and compression should be checked though.
As a final comment, I would like to say that today's modems renegotiate
their connection speed every 30-60 seconds. The initial connect speed is
only just that. As long as a modem can do 50K or so, your modem can and
will automatically negotiate higher and higher speeds as line conditions
allow. Connecting at 28K or 33K does not mean that's the speed you're
stuck with.
Dialups in urban areas are annoyingly slow because of lousy wiring and
crowded line conditions more than any other factors. Try using alternate
local numbers if your ISP offers them and you'll see what I mean.
Whenever I'm in San Francisco dialing out is always a matter of switching
among several Earthlink numbers depending on the time of day and my
specific location--including which particular phone outlet I'm plugged
into. Very annoying. Ah, but when I'm in sparsely settled rural northwest
Maine, downloads are usually at generally high rates. There, I've
downloaded at rates as high as 53K.
Modem voodoo is really somethin'. Everyone has a different opinion of
just what works. This is just my 2 cents worth.
