heh. I was a network manager for a big Fortune 50 company from 1990
until 1995 (and again for about 18 months in 98/00... long story,
don't ask.) and I recall buying three very impressive RAID towers for
one of our Sun SparcServers in 1992. It used the very first
commercially available 3.5" half-height > 2 gig drives (they were
2.1g). Each RAID unit had 5 drives, dual power supplies, and 32megs
of write-ahead cache (a phenomenal amount of RAM memory in those
days)... the price tag for this 10.5 (unformatted, 8.2 usable in a
raid 5 config) gigabytes?

$52,000 each.

Yep, that's fifty two thousand dollars.

What does 10 gigs of space cost these days in a 3.5" HD (if you could
even find a drive that "small"!)? Less than $100 I'd guess.

Indeed.

heh, and this surprised you how, Ralph? =)
