Not at all - you can use the iDisk service from any Mac at all, right
back to System 7.0. The only requirement is that you update the
Appleshare extension to a fairly recent version - whatever's
available as a separate download on Apple's software updates site
will do. The main thing is that the Mac supports Appleshare IP, and
that it has the Diffie-Helman exchange user authentication module
(the DHS UAM) installed. This is a separate file for old versions of
Appleshare (prior to 3.8.5 or so), and built-in since then.

With those conditions met, just use the Chooser or Network Browser to
connect to idisk.mac.com and use your iTools account name and
password. This should also work with an Appleshare IP client
implementation for Unix or Windows, but I haven't tried it yet.

Using the guest access to an iDisk without 9.0 is a bit harder, but
not impossible; it requires a generated password that's sent to the
iTools plugin in an XML file when you connect through the site (you
can identify and download the file in question from the guest login
web page, from a browser with the iTools plugin).

In fact it's possible to use nearly all of iTools - everything but
Kidsafe - with an older Mac OS, by patching the iTools installer, or
just the plugin. The 9.0 requirement is mostly artificial. I did this
back when I was running 8.5 or 8.6, but haven't got a patch for more
recent versions of the plugin (basically just find and patch the
"sysv" gestalt check). If you don't do this, your main requirement is
a Mac with 9.x to use when you sign up for the account.
