I had the same problem with some batteries in my Duo (2300, but close enough)

I got a few type III batteries from the local university's surplus
shop for next to nothing. I figures at $1 a peice it was a good
gamble :-)

Most of the batts were shot and woudn't hold a charge but a few, when
I put them in, would cause my duo to just turn off, no matter what it
did.

I think that the cells in the battery were so dead that they caused
the charging circut (in the power managment unit) in the Duo to panic
and turn off.

So, you probably have a dead Duo battery.

>So anyway, I removed the tape and re-inserted the battery while the Duo was
>running on AC power. It immediately switched off, like hard-power-off. I
>tried various combinations of inserting the battery while in sleep, while
>turned off, etc. -- no dice. If the battery is inserted, the machine will
>not power on or wake from sleep; and if it's running when I insert the
>battery it immediately shuts down.
