I recall as similar discussion on another list. It may be a  termination
problem. On pre-PowerPC PowerBooks it was suggested in an Apple tech info
article that you may need a pass-through SCSI terminator installed between
the SCSI cable and the hard drive.

At the very least, you might need termination at the end of the chain or in
the case of one hard drive, termination for it (which is the same thing I
suppose).
