Here's a remote shot in the dark:

Does this 2300 have an internal SCSI drive?  You can check with the 
Apple Profiler, or use Drive Setup to determine your type of drive 
(don't reformat).

If so -- then there is a remote possibility that you also have an 
internal hard drive within the dock set to the same SCSI id.

Yeah, I know -- far-fetched but stranger things do happen.  Good luck 
with it -- as others have said, "it 'shouldn't' behave as you 
describe.
