You've run into the desktop printer system that was introduced with Laserwriter
8. You might actually find the icon to be rather useful, if you give it a
chance. If you drag a document onto it, the system will automatically open up
the owner of the document, and bring up the printer dialog box. It also
provides a much better printer control UI then the old print monitor does, in my
opinion.
However, if you still want to remove it, pull up the extensions manager, and
remove all the extensions and what not associated with "desktop Printer" that
should make the printer still work, but allow you to do away with the desktop
icon.
