I was the one who got 8.1 down to 20 megs. This was getting rid of just
about everything, including Open Transport (the main internet connection
stuff). This was mainly for RAM and not disk space, so keeping OT shouldn't
be a big deal. With this setup, I got it to right at 20 megs HD space taken
and under 6 megs RAM (5.6 average)
Basically, all I had left:
In the main HD, just the System Folder
In the System Folder:
Extensions:
Appearance Ext
Text Encoding Converter (needed to boot)
Contextual Menus (because I like them)
Control Panels:
Appearance (not really necessary once you get things set how you
like them)
Apple Menu Options (Not really necessary, it's what pops the list
of Control Panels and such off the Apple Menu
Extensions Manager (Also not necessary, but nice)
General Controls (ditto)
Memory (ditto again)
Monitors \
Sound / I removed the Monitors and Sound and support for it and
just used the seperate cpls from Apple Extras (before I deleted them)
PC Exchange (Not needed, but nice for mounting Windows/Apple II
disks if you need to.
Apple Menu Options:
Find File
Chooser
Key Caps
Calculator
Control Panels
Besides those, I left the Text Encodings and Fonts alone, and nuked just
about everything else. Some of the things are recreated (Startup Items,
Preferences) that you just have to leave. Naturally, this is extreme
bare-bonesism, if you're going to want Internet access you'll need to leave
the Open Transport extensions, and for printing you'll need to leave the
printing extensions. After using 8.x for as long as I have now, 7.x is hard
to use :)
Hope this helps!
