>4 - Companys that do the CardBus activation, when asked if 'blah" is >the right way to do it should confirm if it is right or wrong. If >they come back and say 'no comment' I wouldn't trust them AT ALL. This may be wayyy OT, but indulge me here for a paragraph or 2. Way back in time (1996, before recorded history, back when we surfed the net using Netscape 2.0 or Lynx, and told stories around the campfire b/c we didn't have instant messaging), I got a PowerBook 5300. After the bezel was repaired, and after I got a great deal for 8mb of additional memory (only $200!), the dang memory module would keep popping out of the socket! Argh! Several smart individuals came up with a fix--glue foam onto the module, so there wouldn't be any room for it to pop out; it would jsut be wedged into the keyboard and there would be no room to pop. Tekserve in NYC began offering it as a repair. I emailed them about the procedure, and they were nice and described it exactly, and said they wouldn't recommend doing it on your own if you weren't comfortable with opening up the PowerBook and fixing it blah blah blah Several weeks later, Apple came out and said that anyone who did this would be violating their warranty, etc., and that there was now a $12.95 repair part, a special piece of foam, that would only be installed at Apple authorized repair centers etc. For 12.95, it must have been a special piece of foam. Anyway, I feel that places that offer mods to Apple products must walk a fine line with the Mothership. I guess that since the PB 2400 is so old, Apple doesn't care, so they can offer the service w/o too much fear of retaliation, but I don't think they would do it for a currently shipping product. Secondly, I hate to say this, but 999 people doing the mod would accept any negative consequences, but there is always 1 in a 1000 who will threaten to sue. As a small business, MCE doesn't need the hassle. In my own opinion, the charge isn't that much, and most people don't care exactly what the repair is. I don't ask to see my old spark plugs when I get my car tuned up (it helps to drive a Toyota). Myabe as a hobbyist, it would be nce for them to discuss the mod, but again, they probably won't respond on company letterhead. Any way, that is my $000,000,000.02 ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables.
