If you have virtual memory on, which is the default for PPC machines I
believe someone please correct me if I'm wrong), things go faster if:
a. the hard drive is optimized (I like/use Alsoft DiskWarrior and Plus
Optimizer, but opinions on this list vary!)
b. the disk cache is set correctly. What is the disk cache in the memory
control panel set to? I find mine sometimes defaults to 96k, which slows
the thing down dramatically. Setting to 1024k (the value I get when I hit
the default button in the memory control panel) speeds things up no end.
The default settings are worked out according to how much real memory the
computer has, so these may vary - I have 44mB.
