I've done this sort of thing and found that I had to reinstall invisible
files. That's only a good technique for backing up data. System stuff
needs to be backed up differently. I usually just back up data because
I've installed MacOS enough times that I can reinstall it and get it
to a nice usable state pretty quickly.
