Open it up and look at it. My experience is that the force of clicking
eventually makes the dual plastic arms that support the pad of the
clicker become fatigued and crack. You can't simply glue them back
together, but "splinting" them and gluing the splint and arms back
together works very well. (A small piece of cardboard or plastic from a
food container works well. I've fixed three different machines this way,
and they're still working years later.
Next, Sherlock will find all those "cache.xxx" files in a flash, and you
can trash them from within Sherlock. And finally, any authorized Apple
Service Center should be able to get the parts and fix it, if you want to
replace the clicker. MACadam, in San Francisco, is an old and reliable
and survivor Apple Dealer.
