I went thru the same thing with my 2400, i have some details on my page about it at: http://www.liethen.com/filia-ul-copt/ix3d-rr/index.html >ok-- i recently picked up a near new dirt cheap road rocket in the >box for my 2400 >but i have a few questions about it > >1/ i assume, even though the package says G3 powerbooks, that this >card can be used by the 2400 WITHOUT a g3 upgrade, as long as it has >cardbus enabled. Yes? No? Yes and no, I will get into more detail shortly. >2/ I know it will drive an external monitor, but the big reason for >me picking it up was cuz i thought it would speed up graphix on my >2400 without an ext monitor (and it was dirt cheap, at $15, lol)... >is this true? How much faster/better is it with the RR? My goodness does it speed up graphics! I benchmarked the Road Rocket at about 150% faster at the same resoultion (800x600 Thousands) and about 33%-50% faster than stock 2400 graphics wile running at 1024x768 in Millions of colors. The scarry thing was, in the image scroll test the 2400 with the Road Rocket was actualy *FASTER* thean my 733mHz G4 with ATI Radeon! That suprised the heck out of me. All my benchmarks were run with Norton System Info, so who knows how correct they are. :-) When I take the time to set up my 2400 with the Road Rocket, it is a great PhotoShop machine and I can do just about everything I can do on my G4 systems. >3/ CARDBUS. LOL I tried the card. It crashes the finder when i >install it after the 2400 is on, and if i put it in bf booting, the >2400 sits at a grey screen indefinately (wont boot to finder). Is >this cardbus? (or lack of) > >The BIGGIE: if i enable cardbus on my NON-g3 2400, will i be able to >use the RoadRocket? And is it worth cardbussing to use this card? >Any thoughts? Theat's a bif maybe .. here's why ... the PCMCIA slot need to be 'primed' with another CardBus card before putting in the Road Rocket. What I have to do before using my road rocket is, boot up, insert and eject my firewire CardBus card, then load the Road Rocket. I got my 2400 CardBus upgraded by MCE thinking it would make the RoadRocket work, but it didn't. Thanks to a fellow helpful lister (I'm sorry I can't remember who you are) I was told to 'kickstart/prime' PCMCIA with another CardBus card. To get the Road Rocket wroking, you'll need another CardBus card. Hit eBay and pick up a super-cheap newerTech PCMCIA FireWire card (we're talking $10) Try that before going to MCE (I still feel like I got ripped off) -- Peter Liethen - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.liethen.com ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
