You may want to check the jack internals. It almost seems like one of the
'tangs' is
severely deformed. Funny though, I would think it would also affect the
power adapter if
that were the case.

Good place to start. Might try ohming just the I/O board by itself at the
jack terminals while wiggling
the ac adapter plug. See if it shorts. Do a visual on the mechanical
joints.

You can use it plugged into an external monitor and an adb keyboard & mouse.
I generally flip it over and place a small TO-220 heat sink on the cpu to
keep the temp down.
In your case, you probably want to leave it in the bottom clam with an
external monitor, kbd, &
mouse so you can measure voltages around the battery terminals.
