Here is one suggestion:
After installing 9.1 on my PowerBook G3, and using it and having a bunch of
programs crash, I "upgraded" back to 8.6, and have been enjoying crash and
bug free perfromance ever since.

I never evenbothered to upgrade my 2400 from 8.6; that is one darn good OS!

If you never had 8.6 on your 2400 I would suggest you try it. Back in '99,
we on lthe list found it gave us abuot 10% more battery life and the 'book
ran at least 10 degrees cooler.

Do you really need 9.1?
