I would not think so but I sure don't know for certain. If there was a
momentary interruption in the AC power whether in the power line or a
poor connection in the computer's plug and jack, that could certainly
cause Sleep to crash (with a bad PRAM battery). 

I do know that different results can be expected with different models
of Macintosh with respect to a poor or completely bad PRAM battery. The
old 512ke Mac could do without the battery just fine. It would only lose
time, date and some Control Panel settings when Shut Down. But there are
other desktop models that will exhibit various unacceptable behavior if
the PRAM battery fails. I had a poor PRAM batt in a duo 250 that would
keep time and date etc. (with power disconnected and main batt removed)
but it would not allow the machine to Sleep for even one second (with
power and main batt removed). In spite of this, the duo performed
normally otherwise. It would allow Sleep with only the AC power adapter
or only the main battery powering it. But maybe this is not true of the 520c.
