I was under the impression 8 and 8.1 can be used on any 040 Macs regardless of
FPU or not. My 280c has 8.1 installed.
The only limitation with OS 8.1 on non PPC Macs is the startup volume can't be
HFS+, only the older HFS format.
OS 8.5 and up I do believe has to be on PPC only, not any 68K.
