I've been researching this to try to find the exact limits
for each version of MacOS. Previous to 7.5 the limit is 
2GB-1MB and with 7.5 it is 4GB-1MB. Staring with 7.5.2, the
limit has been raised to 2 Terrabytes on "some computers."
Those computers include "any system which shipped with 7.5.2
or newer, and any system with a PCI bus." It's clear that
you can use a partition size of 4GB-1MB, but I'm not sure
if you can go larger on a 2300. Anyone tried it? HFS or HFS+?
