I am using the emachines "etherdock" on my 2300c with OS 8.1 This is a dock
that looks like the Apple "mini-dock" except that the etherdock has an
RJ-45 ethernet port instead of the Apple RJ-11 modem pass through.

This etherdock DID NOT require any software. I just plug my cat-5 cable
into the RJ-45 port on the dock and the other end to my router and I am
"good to go." Just be sure to configure TCP/IP for ethernet and AppleTalk
for ethernet.

I do know that original e-machine docks brand new came with a software floppy
disc, and I would have assumed the website would have free drivers.
good luck
